1 What is a Bridging Course?
In South Africa, a bridging course is a 1 year course that is offered by university faculties, to the undergraduate students who do not fully meet the entry requirements for the courses they are applying for, just after matric.
Bridging courses are often called “extended degree programmes” by many South African universities.
2. What Do Bridging Courses Focus on?
Bridging courses are entirely focused on equipping learners with the basic, introductory knowledge, aimed at preparing learners for the core modules they will be doing in the main course the following year.
Once you have been accepted into an extended or bridging course, you must rest assured that your space is secured to continue with your studies in the following years in the same university. In simple terms – you do not need to re-apply again for the main course.
Theoretical Example: you might apply for a BCom Accounting course at UJ, but your APS score is slightly lower than the required ASP score. UJ might consider you for a BCom Accounting extended degree.
3. How to Apply for Bridging Courses at Universities?
Normally, you do not apply for bridging courses at universities. The universities decide if you should start with a bridging course based on your final Grade 12 marks.
So After applying, you will just be notified if you fall under the bridging course category or not.
