NMU Online Application 2026 – How to get Space

Hello students, on this page I will tell you how to actually get a space when you apply online at Nelson Mandela University for 2026.

First of all, you need to apply on time as the competition to study at NMU gets tougher every year. Admission is subject to departmental selection, and meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance, especially for popular courses.

Second of all, you need to be aware of the “supply and demand” rule at universities:

  • High Requirements = Lower Competition: Difficult courses (like Medicine or Engineering) often have space for those who qualify because the entry barriers (APS 400+) are so high.
  • Low Requirements = Extreme Competition: Courses with lower entry requirements (APS 290–330) receive thousands of applications, making it very hard to find a space if you apply late.

Apply on Time to Get Space – Application Dates for NMU 2026

In order for your application to be accepted, you need to apply on time before the courses are full. Places in certain programmes are strictly limited, so submitting early is in your best interest.

Here is how it works: if you want to study at NMU for 2026, you need to apply during the 2025 cycle.

Important Closing Dates:

  • 30 June 2025: Closing date for MBChB (Medicine), BPharm (Pharmacy), and BRad (Radiography) applications. These programmes have very limited places and fill up fast.
  • 01 August 2025: Closing date for early applications (excluding Medical programmes). Applying by this date increases your chances significantly.
  • 30 September 2025: Closing date for late applications. Applications submitted after August are considered based on available space and academic merit.
  • 30 September 2025: Closing date for International Student applications.
  • 30 September 2025: Closing date for Student Housing (Residence) applications. Residence is limited, and preference is given to early applicants with excellent results.

Documents You Must Submit

To ensure your application is processed without delays, you must upload the following documents. Your application cannot be processed without them:

  • ID Document: A certified copy of your ID (compulsory for SA citizens).
  • School Results: A certified copy of your Grade 11 Final results, or Grade 12 June/September results. (Do not submit Grade 12 March results).
  • Declaration Form: A completed declaration by your parent/legal guardian/surety (downloadable from the university website).
  • Parent/Guardian ID: A certified copy of your parent/guardian’s identity document.
  • Proof of Address: A copy of your current residential or postal address.

Hard To Find Space – Courses that Get Full Quickly (High Competition)

These courses are “hard to find space” in because they have accessible entry requirements (APS 290 – 330). Thousands of students qualify for these, so the queues are long.

  • Higher Certificate in Business Studies: Requires APS 290 (Maths 30% or Maths Lit 50%).
  • Higher Certificate in Accountancy: Requires APS 290 (Maths 35% or Maths Lit 60%).
  • Higher Certificate in IT (User Support Services): Requires APS 290 (Maths 35% or Maths Lit 55%).
  • Diploma in Management: Requires APS 330 (Maths 40% or Maths Lit 60%).
  • Diploma in Public Management: Requires APS 310 (Maths 35% or Maths Lit 55%).
  • Diploma in Tourism Management: Requires APS 330 (Maths 40% or Maths Lit 60%).
  • Diploma in Logistics: Requires APS 330 (Maths 40% or Maths Lit 60%).
  • Extended Curriculum Programmes: These provide access with lower scores (e.g., Dip Management Extended requires APS 310), making them extremely popular.

Medium Difficulty to Find Space

These courses have slightly higher requirements or require specific subjects, which reduces the number of applicants slightly.

  • Diploma in Accountancy: Requires APS 350 (Maths 45%) or APS 330 (Technical Maths).
  • Diploma in Human Resource Management: Requires APS 330.
  • Diploma in Building: Requires APS 330 (Maths/Tech Maths 45%).
  • Diploma in IT (Software Development): Requires APS 330 (Maths 40% or Maths Lit 60%).
  • BCom General (Economics, Business Management): Requires APS 390 (Maths 50%).
  • Bachelor of Education (Intermediate Phase): Requires APS 370.

Easy To Find Space (If You Qualify)

These courses often have space available for late applicants because the entry requirements are very strict (High APS + Pure Maths). If you meet these high marks, you have a very good chance of acceptance.

  • MBChB (Medicine): Requires APS 430 (Maths 60%, Physical Science 60%, Life Science 60%). Note: Selection is very strict.
  • BPharm (Pharmacy): Requires APS 410 (Maths 60%, Physical Science 60%).
  • BEng Mechatronics: Requires APS 410 (Maths 60%, Physical Science 65%).
  • BSc Computer Science: Requires APS 410 (Maths 65%).
  • Bachelor of Radiography (Diagnostic): Requires APS 390 (Maths 50%, Physical Science 50%, Life Science 50%).
  • BCom Accounting (Chartered Accountant path): Requires APS 410 (Maths 60%).
  • BSc Dietetics: Requires APS 390 (Maths 60%, Physical Science 60%).
