Do you know that there are plenty of courses to choose from at the University of Johannesburg (UJ), which do not require pure Mathematics Grade 12 subject? Yes, there are courses from almost all UJ’s faculties.
On this page you will find those courses from UJ where you will be accepted even if you didn’t do Grade 12 pure Mathematics at school. However, you will need to have at least Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy to be considered for these courses.
Very important: If you are applying for a UJ course that requires both Mathematical Literacy and Pure Mathematics, the marks required for Mathematical Literacy are always higher than those for pure Mathematics. This is because pure Mathematics carries more weight that Mathematical Literacy.
List of Courses that Don’t Require Maths at UJ
Below you will find a list of courses at UJ which do not require Grade 12 Mathematics subject. The list of the courses are from FADA,CBE, FEBE, Humanities, and Law:
FADA Courses That Do Not Require Mathematics
Within the UJ FADA Faculty, only the B Architecture and the Diploma in Architecture courses requires Mathematics subject. Other than that, the rest of the courses do not require Mathematics subject. Here are the courses that don’t require Maths at UJ FADA:

CBE Courses That Do Not Require Mathematics
Within the CBE, the only subjects which requires pure Mathematics, are Accounting Degree, Economics and Econometrics Degree, Finance Degree, and Bachelor of Commerce in Accountancy (Online) Degree. FEBE Courses That Do Not Require Mathematics
All courses under FEBE at UJ, require pure Mathematics Grade 12 subject. The only courses that do not require Mathematics under this faculty are:
- Management Services – Diploma
- Operations Management – Diploma
Health Science Courses That Do Not Require Mathematics
Under UJ Health Science Faculty, there are not so many courses that do not require Mathematics subjects. This is because most Health Sciences courses, such as Nursing, Optometry, Environmental Health etc, require Grade 12 Mathematics. However, there are still some courses you can study at UJ Health Science without Mathematics, which are:
- Bachelor of Biokinetics – Degree
- Sport and Exercise Sciences – Degree
- Sport Management – Diploma
Humanities Courses That Do Not Require Mathematics
All courses from the Faculty of Humanities do not require Grade 12 Mathematics subject. You will only require Mathematics is one of your major module is from the other faculty which requires Mathematics. Below are the courses that do not require Mathematics from the Faculty of Humanities:
- Community Development and Leadership – Degree
- BA with specialisation in Development Studies – Degree
- BA with specialisation in Linguistics – Degree
- BA with specialisation in Linguistics and Language Practice – Degree

Law Courses That Do Not Require Mathematics
Within the UJ Law Faculty, only the BCom Law course requires Mathematics. The rest of the courses do not require Grade 12 Mathematics, which are:
- BA (Law) – Degree
- LLB – Degree
The Faculty of Science courses are not included, simply because they all require Grade 12 Pure Mathematics and not Mathematical Literacy subject.
