Are you now thinking of changing your subjects when you are almost at the finishing line – Grade 12? I can’t think of any valid reason for a learner to change from Grade 12 Mathematical Literacy subject to pure Grade 12 Mathematics. That is unnecessary and it is made almost impossible by the system for valid reasons.
First of all, your Grade 10 subject choice should be based on your career aspirations and your abilities – remember they taught you this in Life Orientation?
Second of all, if you change from Maths Lit to pure Mathematics only in Grade 12, are you sure if oyu will be able to pass it? Remember, mathematical concepts and lessons build from grade to grade. So, if you only change in Grade 12, how are you going to catch up all the chapters done in the previous grade 10 and 11?
Realistic Reasons to Change From Maths Lit to Pure Maths in Grade 12
That being said, I would understand a subject change of this nature if it aligns with the following:
- If you totally hate the career options that Maths Lit subject boxes you in, like social sciences, legal, business admin, and other related non science courses.
- If you a one of the above average learners (80% marks plus) that can easily grasp and flow with any academic related work within a brief period of time. But if you are one of these students, why didn’t you go for the harder subjects like pure Mathematics and Physical Science in the first place though?
- If you have the support of your Teacher, HOD and Principle, as they will know your true potential, as compared to your parents, peers and relatives.
Steps to take to Change from Maths Lit to pure Mathematics
A change of subjects of this nature must be done very early in Grade 12, or else you will not get any approval.
The following are the steps to take in order to transition from Maths Lit to pure Mathematics Grade 12 subject, while doing Matric:
- Speak to your Grade 12 Maths Lit Teacher, who will then speak to the Mathematics subject HOD.
- Request an assessment of your pure Mathematics to weigh your mathematical abilities.
- If your school approves, your request will be forwarded to the School District of your area for approval.
- Once the district approves, then you may “pack your little bags” and move to the pure Mathematics class.
