A number of students that we have helped here at Career Wise, have asked us the following question: “Can I become a Paramedic without Physical Science?
On this page, we will guide you on whether you will need Physical Science or not, in order to study towards becoming a Paramedic in South Africa.
In order to determine if Physical Science Grade 10 – Grade 12 subject is needed for paramedics studies, we looked at SIX Paramedics Schools in South Africa. Here are the names of the paramedic schools we looked at:
- University of Johannesburg (UJ) Paramedic School
- Durban University of Technology (DUT) Paramedic School
- Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Paramedic School
- Nelson Mandela University (NMU) Paramedic School
- Netcare Education Faculty of Emergency and Critical Care (FECC)
- Mediclinic (Pty) Ltd Learning Centres
Out of all these schools, we found that amongst other subjects, Physical Science, together with Mathematics (not Mathematical Literacy) are requirement to study any paramedics courses in South Africa. There are no exceptions.
Below are the subjects required to study towards becoming a Paramedic in South Africa:
- Physical Science
- Mathematics
- Life Sciences, and
- English
When you apply at any paramedic school, your Physical Science and other subjects, are not all thats required. You will be required to also do the following:
- Interview – to gauge your communication skills, as well as your passion towards this field
- Medical Examination -to measure your emotional and health stability to successfully do the paramedic services.
- Physical Fitness Test – to determine if you are strong enough to handle demanding tasks when rescuing patients
- Phobia Evaluation – to see if you have any phobias that amight prevent you from successfully executing paramedic tasks
Thank you. I hope the above information was helpful enough for you to make a proper decision on whether to become a Paramedic or not.
