Here is the question that many learners ask us “can I become a Medical Doctor without Grade 12 Physics subject?”
Well, let’s get this clear. You cannot become a Medical Doctor without Grade 12 Physical Science and Mathematics. All South African medical schools require maths and science subjects. Also, you cannot become a Medical Doctor if you have Mathematical Literacy, and not pure Mathematics.
The only Doctor you can become, is an Academic Doctor, which you will automatically become after obtaining a PhD in any field of studies.
If your dream is to become a Medical Doctor one day, you must make sure you select Mathematics and Physical Science from Grade 10 – Grade 12.
Having Physical Science and Maths is just step one. Step to is to do very well in those subjects. Distinctions in Physics (75% and above) are considered average for most students who want to become Medical Doctors.
Here are generic subjects requirements for those who want to become Medical Doctors, based on most medical schools in South Africa:
- English (Home Language or First Additional Language): At least 60–70%
- Mathematics (NOT Maths Literacy): At least 70%
- Physical Sciences: At least 70%
- Life Sciences: recommended subject with 70% or more
- Additional subject (like Geography, History, or Accounting): Must also be passed well to keep your APS high
Grade 11 Physics Are Important for Medicine Studies
Now, you might be thinking Physics subject is only important in Grade 12 for those who want to become Medical Doctors well, that’s not the case. Grade 11 Physical Science and Mathematics subjects are the most important subjects that will open door of medical schools.
When you apply for Medicine at any medical school, you will probably apply between April and June, using your Grade 11 Term 4 Report. Your final marks on this report are the ones that will get you conditionally accepted or totally rejected.
